You Decide What Happened
By: Matt | December 30th, 2008
Depending on your perspective, your reaction to this weekend’s KJH love-fest could have been one of adulation and adoration, of hero-worship and veneration of the next great saint. Or it could have been the closest thing to a funeral for Ajax’s ambitions that will be held under the guidance of the club’s top brass. Since the situation is so fickle, I am going to write two blurbs. You can pick which one you want to read and post on your refrigerator. You can even tell me about it. But, if you have been reading this blog, you know which one will get my most coveted magnet.
…This weekend, at the Amsterdam ArenA, the wild fans of Ajax bid a fond farewell to their captain, Klass-Jan Huntelaar. For several seasons, KJH has scored important goals at a remarkable rate for the club nearest to his heart. His stay in Amsterdam was longer than most had expected because of his love for Ajax and all it stands for. While several giants of Europe came calling, KJH insisted on remaining under the tutelage of Marco van Basten, so that the torch of great Dutch strikers might be passed properly. Now, KJH moves on to Real Madrid in what may be Ruud van Nistlerooy’s ultimate season, another signal of KJH’s high ambitions, prodigious talent, and future successes. Ajax wishes him well and hopes he can win trophies and cups at such a storied club.
(pardon me while I mop up the vomit from my keyboard)
…Last weekend in Amsterdam the club officially divorced itself from the glories of its past and buried its hopes for the future. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, despite wearing the captain’s armband, decided to leave for Madrid, where his place on the Champion’s League squad is not even ensured. The club’s response was to throw a party for this abdicator. The necessity for banners and signs and confetti was clear due to the lack of trophies and cups KJH won during his (short) stay at Ajax. Rather than simply recognizing that this is a good piece of business (selling a player who intends to leave when his contract is up), Ajax decided to prematurely and without merit place KJH alongside the club’s pantheon of legends, all of whom, incidentally, actually won the eredivisie at the least. Rather than recognizing that KJH was never one of our own despite our efforts to adopt the PSV-trainee, Ajax pandered to a want-away in hopes that he will choose Amsterdam for his retirement home (rather than Heerenveen or Eindhoven).
In other news, Ajax crushed ADO Den Haag 3-0. Cvitanich scored the hat trick. The king is dead, long live the king.

Great post, Matt.
I think the truth is probably somewhere in the middle . . .
. . . good-to-great striker, not one of Ajax’s all time best though, never won anything significant in Amsterdam, will likely sit on Madrid’s bench quite a bit, the celebrations this weekend were over the top and hollow, good bit of business for Ajax, but was still a very solid striker and easy first team selection that will take some time and effort to replace (too soon to annoint Cvitanich after only three starts).

I too think Ajax will be stronger without KJH. He is relatively predictable and doesn’t allow San Marco the variance in Ajax’ gameplay. Cvitanich is a different striker. This is good for everyone. Madrid will enjoy Hunter, Hunter will enjoy Madrid and Marco will coach Ajax to the European top again. A bit like Gullit leaving PSV and PSV winning the European Cup the year after
Rejoice!

you know my opinion and while I know you cringe at the thought of us agreeing so much, I think your post is quite true.
I still think he’ll miss Ajax and the Eredivisie as well but then again I’m just a ridiculous old fool – lol.

I’m sorry, but I think you are wrong about this. It is reported by various reliable sources that ajax took the initiative in selling Huntelaar, so it’s a bit harsh to mock him for leaving then. Huntelaar did great at Ajax, and was also off the field a really stable and intelligent person. He wasn’t the one who would keep on whining about leaving, there was considerable interest in him in the last three transfer windows so if he had wanted to leave he could have made his intentions clear. Yet when Ajax said: we would like to keep you here, he said allright and got on with scoring. But if your club accepts a bid from real, you have the permission of your club to leave. If Ajax would’ve liked to keep KJH they should have rejected all the bids, but they didn’t so KjH did like almost all good ajax players do at some point. He left ajax for a nice fee and moved to a really massive club.

Koewart – couldnt have said it better myself. Seems pretty cut and dry to me. Ajax made a deal that made everyone happy, the kid is injured and can’t contribute anymore in Amsterdam, why not let him get started on his Madrid career ASAP? He played his heart out for Ajax and is a crowd favorite, thats why they honored him. He deserves all of it and I can’t wait to see him play with Wes in Madrid, lets move on.

KJH was nice but won shit and deserves no big send off.

Shan, that wasn’t his fault that they won only the cup with KJH, more the fault of the managers. He has been a very important player who always did what he had to do: score. If you are captain and have scored 80 goals in 100 Ajax matches, you deserve a big send off.

KJH deserved a good send off. He had played good. Too bad …i would have loved to see him captain Ajax to CL glory and not warm the bench for Real Madrid (i hope not). Time to move on from him and all the best to him. I don’t think he ‘betrayed’ Ajax. He had promised nothing. Lets focus on our team now, league title and UEFA champions! …nothing less will do!!

What do you think about Rob Wielaert?

I think he is at least better then oleguer, and will make the defence much more stable. He isn’t exactly top class material, but he is good enough.

We’ve been having a decent discussion about the nature of the transfer over on BigSoccer. Some Twente and various non-Ajax fans are up in arms about it.

Hey Guys, do you know on what tv channel can I watch the Eridivisie on? If you do I would be very grateful. If you don’t…well that’s okay…Thanks

Setanta dropped the Eredivise in the states. The internet seems to be the only viable way to watch games. ESPN360 streams games legally, other sites stream games not so legally…

Anybody else notice that Matt’s disappearance from this site was right about the time Ajax decided to crap the bed on the season? Just a coincidence? Or can we officially blame Matt as being responsible for Ajax losing the title again this season?
