Van Basten Already Among the Goals?
By: Matt | March 31st, 2008
It was a good weekend in Amsterdam. (That may be the least informative lead-in you have ever read)
Ajax managed a strong showing against a tough opponent, PSV dropped points, and Feyenoord lost to NAC Breda. So a draw in that last match would have been more helpful in terms of the table, but so what? Watching your rivals lose is always a treat.
More important than this weekend’s action, the first real news about a possible Ajax transfer IN was posted by skysports.com. It seems that Yoann Gourcuff is tired of his poor treatment in Milan following an excellent season for the young Frenchman. Gourcuff is 21, which is not a good age to sit on the bench when you are a talented midfielder with one year of Serie A experience already under your belt. So a move this summer seems possible, although AC Milan claim it would only be a loaner.
Van Basten is all over this one, and it seems he is even the guy who decided to leak it to the media. And why not show a little ambition while you try to convince KJH to stay another year rather than sit the bench behind Rooney and Tevez or Ruudi-gol? I like it, regardless of the outcome. Of course, I doubt it seriously will happen. Gourcuff does too.
Gourcuff, who is under contract to the Rossonero until 2012, added that he would consider a return to France. “Why not?” he said. “But it’s the same with Italy, Spain, England. I don’t exclude anything. In May I will take a decision.”
Maybe he should have said, “I don’t exclude anything, except of course everything that is not in Italy, Spain, or England. So I exclude Holland. Duh?” But already we see van Basten’s star power at work, getting Ajax in the news at least remotely linked to something positive. And if Gourcuff won’t come, maybe a certain teammate of his will…
I’ll be starting a series of posts later this week, in a vain and desperate attempt to convince more of you to support and follow Ajax. You don’t have to look forward to it, but you should.

Great news we need more people on midfield to help fill the gap that Wesley left when he went to Madrid. Keep up the good work Matt, I´m glad that this blog is back up. You should check what´s up at the Netherlands blog from time to time, there´s a lot of people there who are die hard orange followers, and therefore there´s bound to be quite a few Ajax fans………

Mam- Ah, yes, Wesley. A hole in the midfield that may never be filled. But at least they could have brought SOMEBODY in, right?
Corey- Wow, that was easy. That van Basten has some effect on people. Was it the picture?

Matt, I love your blog. Even though I am in Amsterdam every other month or so (and everyone speaks English in Amsterdam), I have a difficult time finding Ajax news in English to keep up with them. Throw in that you have some excellent analysis and you have a very devoted reader. Keep up the good work.
According to the March site statistics, I am not the only person who is happy to have Ajax news–your blog is outpacing a lot of others on TheOffside who have been around a lot longer (like me).
