The Way to Step Forward
By: Matt | March 17th, 2009The dog ate my homework, and wordpress just ate my post. Believe what you want to believe, but know this: if Ajax makes it past Marseille tomorrow, it will do much to ease the wounds of not winning the eredivisie (at least for me). If half of Ajax is dominating the domestic competition, the other half is European glory (and the third half has got to be selling players to Spain, England and Italy for mad cash). If we can’t step forward this season with a title, maybe we can step forward with a cup run?
What to look for tomorrow:
> How many times will Suarez be fouled? The tape from last week’s trip to Marseille should be shown to youth squads as evidence that being a diver will catch up to you. Marseille beat the crap out of poor Luis, who never even had a chance to dive without getting knocked to the ground or elbowed for real. Kids, if the defenders and the official know you to be a diver, the former are going to beat on you without fear of yellow from officials who do not want to encourage a diver.
> Who will start in goal? The Vermeer-Steks saga is just getting warmed up, I am afraid, and is likely to end in a messy transfer this summer. I expect Vermeer will be the guy tomorrow and the rest of the season, barring any case of the flu. I hear that really messes up a keeper’s form.
> Who will be the lucky winner of this week’s fourth defender pre-match raffle/lottery? Greg van der Wiel is suspended, but will be replaced by a Bruno Silva who is playing for a transfer (in his mind, at least). Vermaelen is also suspended, leaving Oleguer and Toby Alderweireld for the middle (who we saw last week). Vertonghen could play on the left, but he is going to be out for awhile. Will it be Urby, moving positions yet again and just after he seems to be getting used to the midfield?
> What comments will the ever-classy Eric Gerets make? He has beaten every Dutch team in European competition this year, and the former PSV-man knows he will be loved in the Arena.

WordPress does eat posts (hoping that’ll be fixed with an impending upgrade), but I’m calling bullshit on your dog.

C’mon, man. It’s been more than two months since this entry was posted; Ajax has played one UEFA Cup match and seven Eredivisie fixtures since then, their coach quit under fire, and, just this morning, his replacement was named. What’s the story? Are you ever gonna post anything again? Maybe it’s time to shut this site down….
