The End
By: Matt | May 18th, 2008A tough loss after failing to score at home, 2-1 aggregate to FC Twente. Full credit to them. They will try their hand at CL football next season, and we will troll along with the UEFA Cup. I am in no mood to do a full write-up of the match. I will have more to say later. But here are a few quick observations.
> Who expected to see Donovan Slijngard today? We needed a left back, and I could have sworn we had a healthy Urby today, dreads and all. OK, so he did not attack quite as well as Urby, but he was solid. A promising appearance from a youngster.
> Jeffrey Sarpong also got a start and looked good. I like Koster’s decisions to play the youngsters, I just wish a better result had come about from it. The match can certainly not be blamed on either of them.
> But what was Koster thinking bringing Urzaiz on? I understand he was surely promised more pitch-time when he signed for Ten Cate, but today was no day for a parting gift. He has never produced, and I was mystified when he was brought on for Davids. An attacking option was warranted, but Urzaiz? Just because he might stumble into a header? Blame this one on Ten Cate.
> KJH is about 75% gone. He was invisible again today. A well-taken late free kick (that was saved by a keeper playing the best 45 minutes of his career) is the only thing I remember. He said he wants to play CL football next season? I guess he intended to do so somewhere else. Or maybe he is just trying to piss me off so I am not as depressed when he signs to sit on Madrid or ManU’s bench.
All things considered, I think the UEFA Cup is a good spot for us. Next year we should be looking to blood the youngsters: Sarpong, De Jong, and whoever else MvB thinks is ready. UEFA will be good for that, a chance to see European competition for the first time for most. And we really need to win the Eredivisie first and foremost. So, I think we trade a pile of money for a Euro competition that we actually could win next year (I am starting already, see?). I am not terribly disappointed, especially since we traded Sneijder for a pile of money at the beginning of the season and still have not spent any. Do I need to defend myself, or would you agree?

PSV will be a bit down next year it appears, although they will surely add some players. Still, we ought to be the favs if we keep Suarez and Steks and spend wisely this time! As for today, Twente just had our number the whole year. We never looked comfortable going forward in any of the 4 games with them. And I think you’re right-UEFA is more up our alley right now.

But the Uefa-Cup is a great platform for Ajax to build a new team on.
Cheers from Enschede

Pathetic. I’ve been a fan since living in Amsterdam in the early 90s. This season trolls a new low. I don’t think there are any positives. It started with selling Sneijder right as the season got underway after everyone thought he would be sticking around, and it will end with the sale of KJH. It’s unclear to me how the “new” regime will be structured, how much money MvB will actually get to spend, or whether or not any of this will actually matter.
