Plenty of Pink Slips

By: Matt | August 4th, 2008

No, not that kind of pink slip. The kind that sends you looking for other employment. We already knew that Nicolae Mitea, Edgar Manucharyan, Robbert Schilder, and Albert Luque were given their walking papers. But the squad was still too big. Today Marco increased the transfer list to include Jurgen Colin, Laurent Delorge, and *gasp* Kenneth Perez.

So, maybe the Perez listing is not as shocking as my theatrics might lead you to believe. Even before the addition of Aissati, the Ajax midfield was pretty well stocked. When Aissati came to Amsterdam expecting to play, somebody probably needed to go. Perez is the odd man out, and I have to admit I cannot find fault in that reasoning. The rest of the midfield either still has a high ceiling or is a solid performer enjoying his prime years. (OK, only one of that last group: Gabri) Perez still has something to contribute, but he was declining physically last year. And next year he would probably be out of the game entirely. As for DeLorge and Colin: yeah, so? DeLorge was a freebie, so any fee is profit.

That is not to say I am glad to see Perez go. He is a talented player who wanted to play for Ajax badly enough to return to the club after his falling out with Ten Cate sent him to PSV. He asked to be moved back when the coast was clear, and he played a vital role in several matches last season. I enjoyed him during his time with the club. He is the type of veteran that is a great fit for Ajax.

Marco also clarified Albert Luque’s status, again, hopefully for the last time. That guy is a moron. End.

Some English language websites reporting Marco’s personnel moves may have overstated his intentions regarding a few other key players. This story reports that George Ogararu, Dennis Rommedahl, Leonardo, and Kennedy were told not to expect many minutes. If anyone of them wants out, they are free to look elsewhere. Several of these names were once first-selection players, so it is possible we will lose a few.

> Twente claims that no more contact has been made over Wielart. And with their CL stage coming up, they would not be happy to receive any calls. They need all hands on deck for their matches against Aresnal. Yeah. Do they really think…? Forget it. Anybody know of any good defenders available?

I read a comment on another Ajax board recently that I totally agree with and responds directly to the conversation you bring up with this blog post. So, instead of writing something myself, I’m simply going to cut and paste. All credit for my direct plagiarism goes to Kowalczyk on the http://www.ajaxtalk.nl board…

“The team Van Basten has in mind is starting to take shape. He seems to have this formation in mind:

    ————— Stekelenburg ——————

    Silva — Oleguer ——- Vermaelen — Vertonghen/Urby

    Gabri ———– Aissati ————– Lindgren/Urby

    Suárez ——— Huntelaar ————— Sulejmani

Also (and I think this is a good sign) he seems to prefer Van der Wiel over Colin. Anita over Ogararu. Sarpong over Perez. Martina over Kennedy or Rommedahl. Mitchell over Luque. In other words: he wants a quality first team and intends to fill gaps with youth players, rather than with mediocre purchases (if possible). That’s a very good thing, if you ask me.”
