New Life in Amsterdam

From now on, we must agree to make the following pledge: before we criticize Ajax, we must begin with a statement recognizing that this is a young team with an inexperienced manager. If that mantra does not remind us how wild the swings in form may be, then we are just not going to appreciate what is taking place on the pitch. The kids are growing up. Sometimes they are good. Some times they are bad. Right now, things are good. Nice.
After surprising everyone in Fiorentina, Ajax met them with spirit and vigor in the Arena, sealing the victory with a hard fought draw. Kenneth Vermeer continues to move beyond the “prospect” category, and the whole side displayed a commitment that has been curiously suspect at times. Even MvB had to admit that Fiorentina deserved better, but Ajax in this tie looked remarkably poised when compared to their predecessors embarrassments against teams from Prague and Copenhagen. This is even more unbelievable when you consider that this side is even less experienced than those of Henk Ten Cate.
Domestic competition has also seen a recovery. Volendam and FC Utrecht might not be the highest grade opponents, but solid victories in matches that were never really in doubt are welcome. Whatever was in the water against Vitesse seems to have passed.
Of course, I am not sure you can chalk it all up to inexperience growing up. We have seen a lot more of Kennedy with a little Leonardo for good measure. Eyong Enoh has reappeared, and Sulejmani is beginning to look more settled (and hello, Vurnon Anita). MvB may be closer to getting a grip on what resources he has available and how best to use them. Regardless of his skill level, getting the right eleven onto the pitch to hold the line against Fiorentina was vital. Full credit to him.
So, is the “crisis” or even “mini-crisis” over? Are we sleeping any better? Three points behind Twente and a dozen behind AZ may not be the best place, but our present form may be a forecast of better standings ahead.
And, while you are commenting, tell me which Ajacied has been most responsible for this resurgence.

I agree, it starts somewhere in the back. And Gregory, he would be getting all the attention standard for Ajax wunderkids if he played anywhere but fullback. Nobody trusts fullbacks from Amsterdam, but this kid could change that.
