Moving On, Moving Up

Ajax 3 – NAC Breda 0
A very strong display from Ajax, dominating possession and creating goals. NAC, for their part, ran afoul of the referee and received plenty of yellows and one red. Cvitanich opened the scoring, with a nifty assist from Suarez, then Siem de Jong got attacked in the box, resulting in a PK which Suarez converted. Lindgren finished things off with a nice shot from range. Ajax had the ball a lot. NAC could not stop fouling. The result was never going to be different.

I was really expecting more of a challenge from NAC, but they failed to deliver. Their attention seemed to be focused on the official rather than the match. We did not allow a goal, but I wonder if this was more due to NAC’s ineptitude today than our defensive prowess. I don’t remember Vermeer being truly tested, but I do remember many moments of stupidity by Ajax defenders.

Moving forward, here are three questions to consider:
1) Is Oleguer a good defender, or is he just fortunate? (His touch is embarrassing sometimes)
2) Is Lindgren the right guy to wear the armband now? (I am assuming it will belong to Steks when he is healthy)
3) Does Cvitanich’s goal and Suarez’s continued excellent play convince you that we DO NOT need to buy any attackers in January?

Luis Suarez is the best thing since sliced bananas. That’s all.

    Nope.

I still think we need another striker if we have any chance of winning the league and maybe a defender.

Replace Oleguer if possible and add a striker. Striker should be first order. We have not many goals lately. Really, I’d like a top playmaker for the midfield more than anything, but I guess they think maybe that’ll be Aissati, although he has not proven anything yet.

I meant to say “we have not given up many goals lately” in the 3rd sentence above.

Another striker is needed….another defender I´m not so sure, maybe we can promote one from the youth squad, and I´ve read that Daley Blind can play there too so…

    Mr.catalonia should be replaced.

His defending has been really shakey and never got why we signed him while there’s already abunch of other defenders out there that we could get.

Today’s rumor (at least one every day!) is Marc Janko, the 25-year old Austrian from Red Bull Salzberg, who has scored something like 3,582 goals in 20 games this season. Cost is rumored to be 10 million euros.

Jack Bell’s soccer column in today’s NY Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/16/sports/soccer/16goal.html?_r=1&ref=soccer) discusses Janko, but says that his ambition is to play in the English Premier League, and that he’s being scouted heavily by Blackburn. Perhaps the Ajax connection of his current coach at Salzburg, Co Adriaanse, will incline him toward Amsterdam, but I’m just not convinced Ajax needs to splash out big bucks (or euros) for him, at least until Cvitanich is officially found wanting.

Ajax didn’t play very well, but won easily after a NAC player was sent off.
