More Grist for the Mill
By: Matt | July 16th, 2008Here is the usual assortment of transfer window news items, a little idle speculation from me, plus the latest development in the KJH saga. Please be patient, we go play at Sunderland on 3 August.
> In his latest move to convince his young starlet to stay on, MvB has named KJH captain of Ajax for the upcoming season. KJH wore the armband on a few occasions last season, especially later in the year. On a team with Jaap Stam, or even Johnny Heitinga, htis would make no sense. KJH is only 25 and has been associated with the club for only two seasons. But who else could be captain? Davids is gone, Perez is going to be fighting for his job, Vermaelen has no proven record of consistent performance. Urby and Steks are great, but I just don’t see them as the captain type. I honestly don’t see anyone on this squad who is a natural fit for it, so using the honorific to convince KJH he is The Man in Amsterdam (or to drive his price up a bit more) is fine by me.
> Frank de Boer will be taking over as manager of A1, splitting time with his national team duties under Bert. Can’t complain here. I just asked for more Ajax legends to be held closer to the squad everyday. Plus, he holds down an important spot on the “Ajax Backroom Starting 11″ I put together a few months back. And did you know he has his own website?
> Kenneth Perez thinks Ismael Aissati could perhaps excel in Amsterdam. Rumors are flying about a proposal from Ajax. I must admit I am intrigued. I was really hoping for him when Wes left last season. I would take him now, too, for significantly less than he would have commanded a year ago. I know we need defenders right now, but I believe two things about Aissati: first, he has considerable skills and second, he’ll never get to use them at PSV. This move is as much for the Oranje as it is for Ajax. If it happens, just go easy on the staff guys, OK? They can tell the difference between a midfielder and a defender. I doubt they will expect him to be marking center forwards and heading balls out of the box, like Jan Vertonghen did late in the year. Wait. Nevermind. Panic.
