More Double-Speak from KJH’s Camp
By: Matt | August 14th, 2008
After months and months (or even years) of speculation, it now seems that the carousel of striker transfers is set to launch it into high gear. Berbatov could move any second now, creating chaos and havoc among clubs that lose out. Drogba is off the market, Adebayor looks settled, silence is deafening from the Eto’o camp, but something has to happen soon. Real may yet move, Barca may try a grab, Juve and Roma are lurking about. For the “big clubs”, the first guy to blink sets the market price with his striker purchase. Everybody else will then try to get away with lowballs, claiming they are left with scraps. In short, if they have been lying all summer, nobody sane would trust them now. Which makes the latest remarks from KJH’s agent more troubling.
His agent, as well as a certain impostor, has been jockeying for media attention all summer. KJH has done his part, talking up his desire to go play in Spain with his buddies or in England for the money. Nobody has been on Ajax’s side, with KJH even turning down a lucrative extension with a decent release clause. But now, the tune seems to have changed from “Come get me, please!” to a game of “hard-to-get”. Regarding claims that Real Madrid has offered 25million euros, the agent says:
“Nothing is going on at the moment - the rumours are pure nonsense.”
This is a guy who has cried “wolf” too many times already. Until the transfer window closes or every possible buyer is out of money or kits, I am going to assume KJH won’t be back. And this comment does nothing to talk me out of that. If KJH has truly decided to stay, let him make that announcement. Until then, I am going to await a Sneijder-like transfer.

My prediction: once Berbatov signs at Man Utd tomorrow, that will get the wheels turning, and by the end of next week KJH will move to Real Madrid for 28M euros. Just a gut feeling prediction. My only hope is that MvB is already doing his research and legwork to line up a couple potential options for a striker purchase in the event that KJH does go. If we see a repeat of the Ibrahimovic sale on the last day of the transfer window and no planned replacement in mind… I might just puke.

Apropos the KJH situation, there’s an interesting if gloomy piece in the August issue of World Soccer (which just made its way to the newsstands of Austin, Texas) by Klaas-Jan Droppert on the state of Dutch football. The headline reads “Poor relations: Dutch football is revered on the international stage but the domestic game is struggling to compete with Europe’s richest leagues.” Quotes: “Perhaps it’s time to recognise that Holland just isn’t big enough for its clubs to compete effectively in Europe.” “The Dutch youth system, especially that of Ajax, was famous for producing a constant flow of talent. But in the past these players could at least be admired in the Eredivisie for a couple of years before the foreign clubs came knocking. The current situation is far more dangerous, with English Premier League academies ‘kidnapping’ Dutch youth players [Krul, Nacer Barazite, Bruma, Van Aanholt, Brouwer] before they have even made their first-team debuts.”

Jurgen Colin is gone. Signed by Sporting Gijon in Spain. Phew… there’s one of Ten Cate’s dead weight signings off the books. Now if only they can find any takers for Luque.
