Marco the “Amateur” from Dennis the “Backup”
By: Matt | September 17th, 2008
Nobody likes a disgruntled backup keeper. But who can blame them for being idiots? It is not like they have much hope to be subbed in terribly often. And when you are clearly a backup to a solid keeper, I am sure you get even more bored. But when you are an aging backup keeper who has never really proven himself anywhere, I guess you get pretty defensive of even your spot on the bench. Dennis Gentenaar has been talking trash, calling Marco “an amateur” because Kenny Vermeer has bumped his way, not into the lineup, but onto the bench. Dennis, is this necessary?
No, because neither of you is going to be playing in anything but the early rounds of the KNVB Cup. Steks is the man, everyone knows this. And Vermeer is probably slated to replace you. He is, after all, a promising youngster from the academy and you are a talent who never quite delivered and are now on the downside of your career. And this decision makes Marco an amateur?
Dennis is really annoyed because he things MvB has been unduly influenced by a slightly too vocal Vermeer, who has already been agitating for some pitch time. Dennis thinks MvB is ready to bend over backwards to keep disgruntled players happy. Assuming he is right, then he is basically daring Marco to prove him wrong. Let’s hope Dennis remains in the bleachers and leaves in January. I expect that Aissati is watching this situation carefully as well…

Done. I’d tell him to stay home the next few months, not even show up for training or games (since he’d never be put on the squad list anyway), and then dump him for free to any second division team that will take him in January. Vermeer is the promising keeper for the future anyway, so it’s no loss as Gentenaar was never going to be a legit first teamer and was only there as cover in case of injuries.
