Law and Order: Ajax, part 3
By: Matt | September 28th, 2008
OK, this is starting to not be funny anymore. (You might be wondering if it ever was funny) Ajax began the season with an unusual number of stories that involved the police and criminal activity. It was cute, it was light-hearted, it was totally off-the-pitch. And then, this happened. Evidently, Oleguer may be serving a prison sentence of up to two years for his part in a riot that injured a Spanish police officer.
First off, there are some things that we need to know about Oleguer. I did not bring it up when he transferred in because I thought “Hey, the guy needs a clean slate. I’ll keep it mum. Why talk about the past?” Well, it turns out you should talk about the past when it involves a warrant for your arrest.
Oleguer is not your average footballer. He skipped training while at Barca complete his degree in economics. Oleguer likes to think, and Oleguer thinks that his own Catalan people should seriously consider independence from Spain (or at least some serious measures toward more self-governance). Of course, the Spanish government is often less-than-keen on the idea, and Catalan “demonstrations” occur from time to time.
Back in September 2003, Oleguer was present at one of these “events”. A police officer was allegedly injured by attendees, and now charges are being brought against Oleguer for allegedly throwing the stone that caused the injury. The punishment could be up to two years in prison.
No witty mock-dramatizations here. This is for real.
* This post is about Ajax, not about Catalan independence. I welcome any news regarding this story anyone wished to share in comments, but I do not intend for this to be a forum on politics.

Matt, I raised the Oleguer question on the Barcelona blog and it’s engendered some very interesting responses from a number of our Catalyunya-based posters.
Take a look:

Thanks for that, ursus. I know the Spanish media stink at getting transfer rumor stories right. It is good to know their standards are not much different elsewhere. I figured it was far-fetched, but with Ajax’s luck with CBs and legal matters recently, it almost seemed possible.

Okay, my new Ajax home jersey FINALLY arrived today, but Matt, in the wake of the Heerenveen embarrassment, MVB’s rant, the UEFA Cup draw, etc., I need you to tell me whether it’s safe to wear it in public. Where are you when I need you? (Just kidding about wearing it in public, of course; I’ll wear it proudly no matter what, though I have to say I’m not a big fan of the new design.)
