Last KJH Transfer News Until…

By: Matt | May 23rd, 2008

…there is something more than talk and speculation, from him and his agent and the rumor mill that is the press.  Mostly because I am more than a little bitter about the whole affair.  For those of you who have not kept up, here are the key developments in the last few weeks, given in a timeframe that will allow for proper interpretation.

1) After MvB is announced, and Bergkamp hired to help train, KJH decides Ajax might be worth sticking around for one more season. There is much rejoicing in Amsterdam.
Translation: Why not train with the best strikers Holland has ever produced rather than Fergie, who ditched Ruud?
2) The week of the decisive match against against FC Twente to determine whether Ajax will play CL or UEFA ball next year, KJH decides to mention that he really wants to play in the CL next year.
Translation: Well, my agent wants me to keep my options open, in case we lose. That way, I am not invisible next year while I plan my big move.
3) Ajax loses to Twente, KJH finishes the playoffs without a goal, and he decides that maybe Euro will be a platform to showcase himself.
Translation: Jeez, I better get outta here. I might disappear after Euro. Let Ajax fend for itself. I trained at PSV first, maybe they will take me back?
4) Amidst escalating speculation over his future, KJH decides to play it cool. He denies ambitions to leave and insists Ajax will make the real decision to keep him or not.
Translation: I gotta play it cool like CRon. Because if I want to move, I also want a ridiculously high transfer fee. So I have to look reluctant. While I look for houses in England, Italy and Spain.

As you can see, I am pretty jaded on this one. I am a little embarrased that he was given the captain’s armband on a few occasions. You just don’t talk like this. If you want out, fine. Look around, get a deal, and go. Don’t taunt and tease fan mags with declarations of love for Ajax while you are plotting your escape.

If you want to leave, go out like Heitinga. A deal was made completely without fanfare and public misinformation campaigns. He was given a fond farewell and will continue to be loved by fans. If this KJH saga continues, I know of at least one fan who will not be cheering when and if KJH makes a return to the Arena. If he does stay at Ajax, I will be glad and I will “make-up” with him. But you just can’t bring yourself to adore a one-year-mercenary, can you?

And do go ahead and post comments telling me that this is the nature of the game these days. I know this is how things must go on. But that does not mean that I have to like it.

> In more important/interesting news, MvB has admitted that he has not spoken to Cruyff since the latter decided not to join the former at the club. MvB declares that time will heal the rift, but we can all admit that Cruyff is a strange character. I can see him holding a grudge that could last for years. But if it means that Cruyff shuts it, sticks to complaining about La Liga, and no longer meddles at Ajax, let’s hope MvB loses Cruyff’s number.

Ain’t the parallels to Van der Vaart uncanny? I keep reading your posts and thinking, “I’ve heard a similar story before. . .” Except that KJH hasn’t played himself out of a big payday this summer, as Rapha has. . .

Ajax beat DVS ‘33 in a friendly yesterday, 3-0, in their last match of the season with a reserves/youth lineup in place of the regular first-teamers.

VDuin (46 Verhoeff); Will, Alderweireld, Lindgren, Slijngard (46 Sterk); Donald, VdHeijden, Sarpong; Martina, Tayeb, Goossens (46 Yildirim).

Goals scored by Martina, Tayeb, and Sarpong.

It also marked the last match Koster was in charge of the first team.

Thanks for that. I like that line-up a lot. Let’s hope we see more of Sarpong next season.
