It Worked?! KJH To Stay?!
By: Matt | May 8th, 2008
Ajax may have caught the big one! Everybody knows the real reason Marco van Basten was hired to be the next manager at Ajax. And everybody knows why he asked Dennis Bergkamp to join his staff. It’s simple really: Klaas Jan Huntelaar, the second-coming of Ruud van Nistelrooy. And the gig might have worked. Speaking to Ajax Life mag, KJH said that he will certainly consider staying at Ajax to work with the two masters.
Read it here and here.
Now, before I get all grammatical and start analyzing exactly what he said, let me first say how much this would mean. THE problem at Ajax has been keeping the superstars here after they hatch and become commodities to European powerhouses. Recently, Sneijder left early as well as Ryan Babel, Hedwiges Maduro, Nigel de Jong, Raph vdV, etc. Should this trend slow down at the very least, it would be tremendously encouraging for the growth of the club. Ajax Finishing School for Young Footballers may be closed, and not a moment too soon because KJH may become one of the truly great ones. And how many strikers have been as successful as he has at Ajax? Losing him was going to hurt, and replacing him was going to be nearly impossible.
OK, so let’s see what he said:
“I admire them for what they have achieved… For me as a striker it’s the creme de la creme to work with. They are two former strikers from whom I can learn a lot. I am open to that. Such a thing can become very important when I make up my mind a few weeks from now.”
No promises, keeping it vague. At worst, KJH is just avoiding being branded a lame duck in an interview with a fan mag. I doubt this would have been the time and place to announce your intentions of moving to Manchester. So I thank KJH for at least saying the right thing at the right time (takes notes, Raph vdv). At best, the next generation of Dutch goal-scoring talent will be learning from the last.

I saw that story on ESPN this morning and to say that you could have knocked me over with a feather was a mild understatement. I said to myself, “self, this is exactly what Ajax needs to happen to get back to being a big player on the European stage.”

Love the comment about VdV saying the right thing at the right time! Notice how quiet he’s been this spring? On second thought, maybe it’s because he’s been playing like crap.
