Incoming!
By: Matt | April 22nd, 2008This looks like it will be a busy summer in Amsterdam, with many departures to be complemented with an equal number of arrivals. Get ready: KJH will probably leave, Heitinga is certainly gone, teams will make runs at Urby and Stek-osaurus. And unsubstantiated rumors about Suarez will probably arrive in a few weeks, too.
I don’t want to talk about any of that stuff. Because eredivisie.com recently posted the first Ajax incoming player story. And it is an interesting one. Certainly more credible than goal.com, eredivise.com linked Dario Cvitanich to Ajax for a mere 7 million euros, a value also known as the tiniest fraction of what we will receive from the sale of KJH. According to the story, all that is lacking is the contract.
And Cvitanich might figure to be a replacement for KJH. I say “might” because any 5′ 9” striker will likely struggle to replace KJH. Cvitanich is currently playing for Argentinian side Banfield. He is of Croatian and Argentine descent and has not decided which national side to play for. This is probably because he has not been picked. At age 23, these things should be decided.
His height worries me unless we plan for him to play on the wing. We tried this with Edgar Manucharyan, a talented Armenian who has yet to figure in regularly. Of course, Cvitanich and Manucharyan could be our answer to Rommedahl’s questionable form.
Cvitanich would be alright, and the price is not outrageous. Espanyol is also interested, so we had better hurry up. And you know the kid is going to be OK. He has a youtube video. The second goal on here, an outrageous chip, has got to be worth a few million alone. And I think they heard me talking about his lack of height. Several headed goals included. I bet Banfield made this video.

Seems like the club is already planning for life without KJH.
I’d be curious to know how much influence, if any, MvB had on this signing.

Hi all, the Netherlands blog moderator here
.Happy to have found you!
According to a well informed Dutch journo, Marco has taken the reigns at Ajax, replacing an almost defunct Martin van Geel. Marco overruled several decisions by Van Geel, like Koster’s negotiations with PSV (he blocked it telling Koster he wanted him to stay) and Groenendijks sacking (Groenendijk received a major raise earlier on by Van Geel but now Marco wants Fons out).
It seems Marco will go for the all encompassing technical director’ position a la Louis van Gaal in the early 90s.

Thanks for the “inside” info, Jan.
Jon, I am curious myself. Since MvB is busy preparing for Euro, did he have time to scout out some kid in Argentina who has not even made an international debut?I don’t think I would mind another van Gaal type, provided he produces the same results

Good point, I thought that too. If Marco can bring the CL to Amsterdam, who cares?
From what I hear, Marco recently did a tour around the big Euro clubs (Arsenal, Milan) to construct partnership deals and to check if he can get some young talents on loan. The names that appear in the news do suggest someone at least is very active.
Having said that, I don’t think Oranje is taking up too much time for Marco. He has the Oranje selection in his head for 99% (Engelaar or Kuyt seems to be the only question mark). Other than that, Hans Jorritsma will take care of all the organisational prepping.

Martin van Geel resigned: “We have two captains at the ship. Ajax is taking a direction that’s not mine, so I will go.”
According to the press release, Ajax wanted to find a new position for Van Geel, who was praised for his loyalty and work ethics.
It seems Marco will officially get the technical director’s title now.
