Here’s What Happened…

I was gone for a long weekend, but Ajax stayed busy. On one hand, we took a giant step toward putting our European demons out by smashing Borac 4-1 away. On the other, we dazzled by most accounts but still cannot make the chances add up to dominance. F*word escaped us with a draw. But the worst news by far is on the injury front. A setback for Aissati and a new injury for Sulejmani add up to trouble.
First, let’s talk about midfield. Now that it looks like Aissati is going to be missing, newcomer Eyong Enoh gets his chance and Evander Sno gets to make up for his shady beginnings. As for Sno, I think we like what we see, yeah? He is a dynamic presence, physical and active, whereas most Ajax midfielders are of the technical variety. I like what he brings, as long as the other mids do their jobs. At least until Aissati gets back, we will continue to see Enoh and Sarpong get a chance. This cannot be a bad thing, but it would be nice to get some stability soon.
Now, Sulejmani has easily been our most impressive newcomer. He has fit in well since his first runout, and he has contributed goals and assists as well as width and speed. He is a terrific Ajax winger, but not for the next 6 weeks. It looks like Leonardo will be the replacement for the foreseeable future, giving him a chance to earn a decent transfer. If he falters, will we see Dario? I have not seen him on the wing yet, but I would probably prefer it to Rommedahl. Jan Arie van der Heijden might get a look if things get bad. But Suarez looks comfortable, and he was often able to create opportunities without another strong winger last season. We might be able to afford six weeks without Sulejmani, barely. But if anyone else goes down we will certainly be playing catch-up this spring.
As for news from the blog front, I recognize that I have been spotty lately. But with the eredivisie page returning to action, more traffic might bring some interested Ajax fan who can read Dutch and can maybe help me out …

I’d like to see less of VD Wiel, particularly at fullback. And not too sold on him as a cb either given his limitations. Like to see more of Siem De Jong-the midfield has looked sooo mediocre and just plain lacking in creativity-this guy actually has vision and passing skills to advance the ball to our best players. We are really struggling in that link up right now. Also,Sno is not a good fit, in my view. Just seems a touch out of it, a step behind it, and sucks at passing and shooting. But the new guy from Cape Town Ajax, Enoh, looks like a very fast and relentess ball-hawker from his 20 minutes or so against Feyenoord. And please no more Leonardo. Just brutal to watch. Kennedy and even Rommedahl seem better options if mvb doesnt want to play Cvinatich on the wing.

De Jong and Enoh looked really god last nite. Especially Enoh. He’s got to be the new starte at def. mf. So much better at seemingly every facet than Sno.
