Further Away and Closer Behind

Ajax did what had to be done and won a great victory today 4-2. There wasn’t much in it for Ajax in the first half, with Heerenveen handling the ball well. But Suarez struck just before half after a pass deflected off a defender, KJH volleyed, and the keeper pushed it to him. Rather lucky, truth be told, but Suarez made good on it.
After such a tight first half, who would have guessed there were five more goals coming? Kenneth Perez put Ajax in charge just before the hour, but Heerenveen answered a few minutes later. KJH replied instantly with his first before adding another for good measure and more attention from Europe. Heerenveen added the last in stoppage time, but it was not enough.
As you may have guessed, I really only got to see the first half before my (ahem) online friend chose to switch to the PSV-NEC match. So I missed all the hubub in the North, but I did get to see NEC make the title race somewhat interesting again. The 0-0 draw actually flattered PSV. I guess my snide remark about how they never seem to drop points cursed them, and so I will be happy to reiterate my belief that the title race is actually over. 5 points down to PSV with 3 matches left and at least 3 points clear (and maybe even 5) of everyone else.
Regardless what comes of all that, the win today puts us 6 up on Heerenveen and may lead to us being paired with them in playoff round 1. More will be clear after Feyenoord-NAC Breda tomorrow, but we are distancing ourselves from that pack of wild Dutch hounds chasing us to the playoffs.
