Dashing Off
By: Matt | August 6th, 2008I am under the gun on a deadline and just hours away from an unplanned trip, so it looks like I will be unable to post a preview of the upcoming Amsterdam Tournament. It is just as well. I would have spent the entire post trying to decide if the tournament means anything. So I will just give you a post-tournament post on Sunday and refer you here until then. And now for some lovely pieces of news.
> I have already told you that I am long past having anything to say about Albert Luque the player. He is perhaps the crowning disappointment of the Ten Cate transfer strategy. I remember seeing stories perhaps the week that MvB was appointed manager that Luque was done, but everybody knew he would no play role in the future as early as last October. So, when MvB included him in the transfer list, no one was surprised. Except for Luque, who claims that MvB promised him he would “continue” to play an important role. Wow. I know it is “he said vs. he said”, but does Luque have any credibility? No. And neither does his agent, who dropped this gem of a statement to reporters:
“We understand that Ajax want to build a squad with players of 20 or 21 because that is the philosophy of the club. We respect that approach, but it makes no sense to make a player that did so well last season now train with the second team.”
By my count, Luque scored four goals for Ajax last season. Which is as many as Dennis Rommedahl. Who will probably be leaving with Luque. End of conversation. Go back to Newcastle. (And, as far as I can remember, he did not play again after getting into that fight with Suarez back in November. Suarez did. Good choice, Adrie).
> According to the website that never met a rumor that was not worth spreading, goal.com, Ajax has tried to include one of their soon-to-be castaways in order to seal a deal on Twente’s CB Wielaert. Twente is still not budging. I mean, if a swap involving Jurgen Colin cannot get Twente talking, maybe we should look elsewhere. Or we should just pay them what he is worth.
> Rather than train with Ajax 2, Kenneth Perez went AWOL today. I hate the timing of this, what with Luque crying foul and calling MvB’s integrity into question. The squad could probably do without the distractions. But I cannot blame Perez for this. So I am just not going to say anything else about it…
> Roma is reportedly still circling Amsterdam, looking for an opening to swoop in and steal KJH. Should he go, I would love to see him in Rome. But those cheap @#$%^ probably would not pay what FC Real ArsJuveMan United would. Good for Roma, bad for Ajax.
