Argentine Invasion
By: Matt | May 31st, 2008So the man who brought you Dario Cvitanich is now angling for another young Argentinean. This time Marco is raiding Boca Juniors for their 22 y/o defender Jonatan Maidana. The man has already inspired his share of youtube vids culled from his three seasons of play for Boca and handfull of U-20 national experience. OK, so more than a few of those vids are merely photos of Jonatan set to some guy who sounds like Qique. (Maybe it is. I muted it). I am not linking to those. Here is a goal our potential replacement for Heitinga scored last season.
If nothing else, this is at least signs of Ajax trying to do what Ajax does best: sign young talent after some good scouting. It beats raiding the Eredivisie. 3 million euros is probably one-fourth the asking price of Sulejmani. Of course, we must also worry a bit about our Argentinian connections. Mauro Rosales did not exactly pave the way for Argies to excel in Amsterdam, but I am not quite sure that it was the player’s fault. And who knows, with so many Spanish-speaking players around, maybe we can convince Van der Vart Amsterdam is really Spain and he will want to come back.
> Some outgoing transfers are being reported. Rydell Peopon is officially a Spartan. Eric Hejblok, the 3rd keeper, is going away.
> Ajax is reportedly still chasing FC Twente’s Douglas, the CB who make KJH disappear. CBs are good targets for us right now. We need one to replace Stam, one to replace Heitinga, and one to transplant all living tissue with Vermaelen so he will stop being injured all the time.
> I am going to do a full post on Ajax in Oranje later this week, but for now I will mention that Ryan Babel may be out of the Euros. Handy links to the Oranje blog (well-written,too) appear at right.

Douglas aint going anywhere unless Ajax coughs up some serious money. With the reputation of penny pinching cheapasses that won’t happen, so Douglas will visit Amsterdam just once next season. (unless more play off fun is in the making and another humiliation is in the making)
