Ajax News 11.2.07
By: bryan | November 2nd, 2007Sorry for the lack of updates this week, but I’ve been busy with work. The news:
• Ajax defeated Heerenveen 3-1 in the third round of the KNVB Cup on Wednesday and will face NAC Breda in the fourth round in mid-January.
• Wim Jonk was named as an individual trainer for the Ajax youth academy. You may remember Jonk as the holding midfielder on the Netherlands’ excellent 1998 World Cup team, but he also played for Ajax in the early-90s, as well as Volendam, Inter Milan, PSV and Sheffield Wednesday. Jonk was a change-of-pace from the usual characters in the 98 and 94 Oranje squads, namely because he didn’t say or do anything to, for lack of a better word, piss everyone off. He wasn’t as talented as those that did, but he was a key to the engine room. His role is to focus on the technical development of older youth players.
• This is a few days old, but Hedwiges Maduro wants to see continuity at Ajax before he signs a new contract. He’s already on his fourth coach in four years. I couldn’t agree more with his take, as Ajax doesn’t seem to really have a direction these days. Hopefully a permanent coach will sort that out, but the issues lie deeper.
• Adrie Koster is confident the club can replace retired Jaap Stam in the form of 19-year old Gregory van der Wiel. Read the article here. Meanwhile, Rob Hughes of the International Tribune profiled Stam and Werder Bremen’s Ivan Klasnic difficult decisions in the face of uncertainty. Great stuff.
• Finally, after two goals scored against Heerenveen off free kicks, Koster is delighted that all the practice is paying off.
