Ajax Forgets to Finish, Wins Anyway
By: Matt | September 14th, 2008This was not the Ajax we expected, but we have no reason to be terribly disappointed. Against a decent opponent, Ajax dominated possession (60% or better) and took 23 shots (12 on goal). It is just a shame that only one of those shots ended up on the score sheet. On a day when one goal allowed would have been enough to drop points, the backline unexpectedly showed they were up to the task. 1-0 Ajax was the outcome, a scoreline few would have guessed.
The lineup was solid, and the midfield was able to control possession much more effectively than last week. Sno and Urby looked much improved, and Jeffrey Sarpong looked adequate as well. Oleguer and Vermaelen also gave better performances. KJH had several chances to score, as did MANY other Ajax players, but he missed them. After Vermaelen scored off a corner (54′), it was beginning to get almost comical. Chance after chance was left begging for a second goal. But Roda was not interested in making this comedy into a tragedy for MvB.
All in all, it is a needed win and a good performance from the defenders especially, an encouraging sign before traveling to Belgrade to face FK Borac.
The question for you is “Was this a sign of Ajax’s strength or Roda’s weakness?”
