Late Review #1: D’s and Keepers
By: Matt |
It may be kinda late to grade out the season, but I am graduate student who has been up to his eyeballs in work until this week, and Euros don’t start for a few more days. Plus, some emotional separation will hopefully allow me to be a little more fair and a little more reasonable. We’ll see how long that lasts in this post, where I opine on the performance of our keeper and defenders.

Argentine Invasion
By: Matt |So the man who brought you Dario Cvitanich is now angling for another young Argentinean. This time Marco is raiding Boca Juniors for their 22 y/o defender Jonatan Maidana. The man has already inspired his share of youtube vids culled from his three seasons of play for Boca and handfull of U-20 national experience. OK, so more than a few of those vids are merely photos of Jonatan set to some guy who sounds like Qique. (Maybe it is. I muted it). I am not linking to those. Here is a goal our potential replacement for Heitinga scored last season.

Last KJH Transfer News Until…
By: Matt |
…there is something more than talk and speculation, from him and his agent and the rumor mill that is the press. Mostly because I am more than a little bitter about the whole affair. For those of you who have not kept up, here are the key developments in the last few weeks, given in a timeframe that will allow for proper interpretation.
Davids to Leave Ajax, Again
By: Matt |
I am going to begin by saying that it was really great to have Edgar Davids in Amsterdam this season. He did not come for some farewell tour. He intended to bear those goggles into the fray as usual. Ajax needed a strong, veteran presence both behind the scenes and on the pitch, especially after Stam retired. Davids was that guy. Although he has seen his share of controversy on his tour of Europe, I have always enjoyed the way he plays. In a way, he is almost the anti-Ajax: a bruising presence who plays the game ragged. And that is his art.

The End
By: Matt |A tough loss after failing to score at home, 2-1 aggregate to FC Twente. Full credit to them. They will try their hand at CL football next season, and we will troll along with the UEFA Cup. I am in no mood to do a full write-up of the match. I will have more to say later. But here are a few quick observations.

Final Match Preview
By: Matt |
I am making this preview a day early because tomorrow is going to be a wash, like most of this week. Right now, I am hoping I will get to sit down and enjoy the final match of the season, but it is not looking too good. You, undoubtedly, will enjoy our comeback at the Arena Sunday. And I will tell you why.

It’s All About Trust
By: Matt |
FC Twente must really be flying high. They have not lost to Ajax this season, and they stand with a 2-1 advantage after the first leg of the playoffs. Unlike a few teams in the Eredivisie, they do not seem intimidated by the Amsterdam giants. They are so bold right now, they might even publicly announce a move for Ajax’s manager. Which is exactly what they did.

Less Than Effective
By: Matt |
I am going to try to stay as positive as possible here. A 2-1 away defeat in the first leg by no means is decisive, yet. The away goal from Suarez could be a tremendous aid. A 1-0 victory at the Arena will be enough. Looking at the highlights, however (I was out of town and unable to watch. Did I jinx us?) we may have something to worry about. As commented below, we did not create that much. I was not blown away by their attacking prowess, but N’Kufo can be deadly effective.

Short Hop
By: Matt |I am going to be gone all weekend and will not return until late Sunday night. I do not even expect to see the match this weekend against FC Twente, so I expect some comments here from you in lieu of a match report. Consider it a homework assignment from a guy who just finished his spring semester.
